Competence Creates: Everything Else Is Theater

4 High-Leverage Moves to Build Real Product Mastery
Most salespeople are trapped inside their own presentations.
- They’re busy retrieving features, benefits, and rehearsed lines while the real conversation is happening in front of them.
- They miss the hesitation, the forming objection, the subtle buying signal.
- They are IN the conversation instead of ON it. (see article)
This is not a charisma problem.
It is not a personality problem.
It is a competence problem.
When product knowledge is shallow, cognitive load stays high. Working memory is consumed by “What do I say next?” instead of “What is this buyer actually thinking?”
The seller becomes a performer reading from an internal script instead of a strategist reading the room.
Competence is the only form of confidence that survives contact with a sophisticated buyer. Everything else: forced enthusiasm, clever openers, motivational self-talk is theater. It collapses the moment the buyer asks a question the seller cannot answer cleanly.
Here is the system that builds real competence.
Move 1 - Be a product of the product
Direct experience is the highest-bandwidth learning channel available. Use what you sell. Live inside it. Feel the friction the customer feels. Discover the nuances no brochure ever captures. Nuances are where deals are actually won. Features are table stakes. The unexpected operational win, the small emotional shift, the edge-case advantage; these are what serious buyers care about.
If the product can be used,...use it. Experience compresses years of second-hand knowledge into weeks of first-hand knowing.
Move 2. 'Steal' knowledge from the people who built it
Some products can't be used personally. For example, I sold cell tower equipment and I wasn't going to install a tower in my backyard. Over my wife's dead body! 😝
So, I did the next best thing. I went to the source: the Product managers and Engineers who built it. I presented them my slide deck and walked through each one. I told them what I was going to say, and they would guide me: don't say that, say this. Don't do that, do this. I let them interrupt and grill me the way a skeptical customer will.
This deliberate practice under pressure was awful! They beat me up pretty bad, but they did it with love to make me better. Most sellers avoid this approach because it exposes gaps and hurts their ego. But that 'beating' is the entire point. Tacit knowledge: the “why they built it this way,” the real competitive edges, the failure modes, etc. My goal was to extract info systematically so I wouldn't screw up in front of a client.
Move 3. Turn AI into a personal training system
Okay. Now you may be thinking, "Victor, I can't be a product of the product AND I don't have access to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). What should I do?!"
I'm glad you asked!
Answer: Use a FREE power tool called Google NotebookLM.
Prepare to get you mind blown. Here's how you can use to become an SME and build that confidence:
Step 1: Upload every product sheet, brochure, competitive analysis, and internal document.
Step 2: Then use Google Notebook to:
- Generate flashcards to help you practice the knowledge from the information you've uploaded.
- The AI tool will even generate a quiz that you will take and be scored on.
- Or, hit the AUDIO button and it will generate a podcast/overview of two people discussing the information you've uploaded. Download the audio. Listen while driving or walking. Three ways to compress your learning curve!
Move 4. Install the 1% compounding machine
Now you have 3 options to increase your competence. The last step? Implementing and executing on your option.
Did you know that if you were to improve at a rate of 1% every day, at the end of:
- 72 days → ~2× better
- 232 days → ~10× better
- 365 days → ~37× better
What does 1% a day mean?
Well, there are 1,440 minutes in a day.
One percent is roughly 15 minutes.
If you spend fifteen focused minutes every day on the single subject, you will grow at a compounding rate
This is not motivational arithmetic. It is the mathematics of exponential growth applied to skill acquisition.
Linear daily effort compounds into nonlinear advantage.
Sales performance is rarely limited by closing technique or personality but more about product knowledge.
- Shallow knowledge keeps the seller inside their own head.
- Deep knowledge frees them to stay inside the buyer’s head.
Everything else like rapport, objection handling, or negotiation is downstream of that one variable.
Competence creates confidence.
Confidence creates presence.
Presence closes.
Competence Creates Confidence. Everything Else Is Theater
